What's the point?

I've always hated writing. I love reading, but writing was never my thing. It seemed to take to much time and was pretty tedious. My stepmom is a writer, and she would frequently take time from her day just to write. I always though how boring it must be, and never really understood it, which is why I find it funny that I even started a blog! Unless it's a photo blog, you have to write, ya know?

Over the past year or so, I've actually grown to love writing. It's fun to sit down and just create something, and usually rather quickly. I've decided to 'challenge' myself a little, and am participating in a few various writing 'clubs' online. I'll be given certain prompts, a topic to write on, a time limit, etc, and I have to follow the rules. I'm actually extremely excited about it! I know I'm not an amazing writer, and I don't even consider myself a writer, but I know this is something I will enjoy, and nothing bad can come from this! It will also be strange to write fiction, because that's something I have never explored before, aside from school...

Before I start participating in some 'real' assignment, I decided to Google a random prompt and do the first one that came up as well as give myself a 5 minute time limit to see what I came up with. The prompt was 'life' and here is my response:

LIFE.

I guess you could say I was a pessimistic kid, because I frequently asked my dad,
'What's the point?'

'What's the point of going to school?'
'What's the point of getting a good job?'
'What's the point of earning money?'
'What's the point when we're just going to DIE in the end and none of it will matter!'

He would always laugh at me and say,
'Well, you will eventually die, but having an education and money makes your life a whole lot easier.'

Of course, being a young kid, I didn't fully understand the effects of money. I didn't understand the concept of paying bills, paying for vacations, saving your money. I just saw that the adults in my life were at work all the time and that I was always in school, both of which I loathed.

Now that I am an 'adult', I understand what the point is. I understand that you work so that you can enjoy your time off, you work so you can pay your bills, you work to make money.

But at the same time, I still find myself occasionally asking, 'What's the point?'

  1. That's very interesting. I have always loved writing and I am ALWAYS working on a project of some sort. I've gotten a few short stories published and I'm writing my third novel right now (no bites yet) and for me it's crazy NOT to write every day. Ryan doesn't get it though.
    I think you're a great writer though. =]
Have you ever heard of NaNoWriMo? It's for National Novel Writing Month and every November there's a big group of people who get together and spend the whole month cranking out a 50,000 word novel of any kind. I do  it every year. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don't but it's always fun and a good challenge. =]

  2. I understand it in the sense that I could see how someone could feel that way, but not in the sense that I have to do it! That's great that you write everyday though. I couldn't even IMAGINE writing a novel! Oh man, that would be so much work!

And no, I haven't heard of NaNoWriMo! It sounds super fun though. That's so many words!
