No, you're actually NOT her aunt.

Is it wrong for me to get mad at some of my sister's friends for calling themselves an aunt to my niece, when in fact, they aren't really her aunt?

I don't know why it drives me crazy, but it does. I ran into some of her friends before Alyla was born and may of them said, 'We're going to be aunts soon!' and I would just want to punch them and say, 'Umm, did you live with Suzanne or Nick your whole life? Have you been through the highest of highs or the lowest of lows with either of them? No? You haven't? Then back the fuck up.'

I know it's a little harsh to think that, and it's not that they are bad people {though some of them I loath}. I totally think that there are a couple of friends in her life that absolutely deserve the 'auntie' status, even though they 'aren't'. Those women are amazing and have been through the trenches with her, and they know who they are. But others haven't.

They don't worry about Suzanne like I do, they don't love her like I do, and they will never be able to love Alyla like I do. Just sitting here thinking that they would even compare themselves to ME makes me so frustrated I want to cry.

I think the term 'aunt' or 'auntie' needs to be earned. I don't consider it a fun little saying to throw around between friends. Maybe I'm just extremely defensive and need to chill out, but I'm proud to say I'm an aunt, and I don't want just anybody to be able to claim that!

She's my baby niece.
{And of course a few other peoples niece, and they are all very deserving of their titles of aunt/uncle!}

Does anyone else feel this way?
Please tell me you do!
{I don't want to think I'm crazy.}

  1. Omg dude! I totally know! A lot of it is terretorial though and I want to be Barrett's only aunt. ;) lol. But obviously that's not possible. I did have this one girl who i totally LOATHE and who thinks we are friends though run up to me in the mall and demand to see her "Niece" Ya, she didn't even glimpse Lily and I gave her a good tongue lashing. ;) lol. She hasn't bothered me since. lol. The other thing I hate is how Alicia has Rubie call every single one of her friends "Auntie." The word has no real meaning to her cuz she has dozens of "Aunties" :(

  2. Yay I'm so glad you understand! And it's definitely a territorial thing. I don't mind sharing it with the people who 'deserve' it, but not just any random person who is friends with my sister! That's awesome that you stood up for yourself, I definitely will next time. I'm even more sensitive about it now that Alyla is actually here.

    That would drive me CRAZY if my sister tells Alyla everyone is her aunt like Alicia! Oh my goodness! Ahh! Just thinking about it makes me mad haha

  5. Checking the genealogy dictionary: an aunt is the sister of your father or mother; the wife of your uncle--that's all--no one else!
    In a regular dictionary I also found this reference: a term of address used by children for any woman, esp for a friend of the parents.
    With the kind of people they sound like, as soon as the newness goes away, so will they. Blood lasts a lifetime!

  7. I would definitely feel the same way in your situation. I am pretty crazy though. ;]

    hahahhaa

    So I agree with you [[as usual]]....

    You are her one and only true aunt, and she will know it because you will be a big part in her life and never leave her or her mommy's side. =]

    Alyla is such a cute, unique name. I'm happy for you!!!!

    Love,
    Auntie Veronica

    (jk hahahaha) =D lolll

  8. Well I'm not her only aunt because of family on Nicks side, but I get what you are saying =]

    And I thought her name was so cute too!

    Silly =P

  9. I agree--the genalogy dictionary is correct. I never remembered calling my parents friends or even any adult an aunt unless they were related. All adults were called by Mr. or Mrs.--no first names used in the dark ages. Maybe that is why there is so little respect for adults anymore. . . back to genealogy--my Sunday occupation

  10. Ya, I never called any of my friends aunt or uncle. I did however call them by their first names.

    And come to think of it I always called my aunts and uncles by their first names. I did live with them for a while so it would have been weird.

    I used to do a lot of genealogy research when I was younger {and went to church} but I haven't in a long time!
