GoodReads

At the beginning of the year, I made a goal on GoodReads that I would read 48 books.

Hold up, have you heard of GoodReads? It's a place where you can write/read book reviews, have lists of books you've read/want to read, etc. It's amazing. The thing I love the most was a little widget where you could set a goal for how many books you wanted to read in a year, and you would update it with the books you read as you go.

Ok, so back to where I was. I dedicated myself to 48 books, which is one every week and a half. I don't know what I was thinking, considering I'm in school full-time during spring and fall and also technically full time during the summer, in addition to working part time and having a husband and dog I like to see. I think at the end of last year I was reading a lot of YA books since I was still working at the library and could check them out everyday, but I've kind of moved past the YA books into adult books and I've realized they are the size difference of about 200 pages and the words are in a smaller print with bigger pages. That's a lot of extra reading.

I've constantly been behind this entire year, but am getting a little closer to catching up. I only have 14 books left to read before the end of the year! Ya, I know, that's still kind of a lot, about 2 books a week. I really don't like not completing a goal, so I totally plan on trying to do this, despite Vince's insistence over the past few days to put down my damn book/Kindle and talk to him.

I have a few books on my list that I am excited about, but I still need your help. Give me some titles that you really love that are a quick read! Not necessarily short, but good enough that you just fly through it. I don't like extreme sic-fi books or romance novels, but pretty much everything else.

To give you some variety of what I've read, in the past couple months I've read:
Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One of the Fifty Shades Trilogy*////Fifty Shades Darker: Book Two of the Fifty Shades Trilogy
The Procedure (Free download right now!)
What Alice Forgot
Not My Daughter
(To see the rest of what I've read this year, click here. You may have to add me as a friend, so if you want to I'm on there under Steffani Rideau!)

The next ones in my queue are:
1929 (Book One)
Gone Girl: A Novel (Thanks for the recommend, Sara!)
This Little Piggy Went to the Liquor Store: Unapologetic Admissions from a Non-Contender for Mother of the Year

So share your suggestions!

  1. Read Shantaram.
    Then read it again.
I also really enjoyed The Alchemist by Paolo Cuelho and The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.

All of the Buddhism books by Noah Levine are awesome and I also really like Brad Warner for the same.

    1. I've heard good things about the Alchemist, so I'll definitely add that to my list. I'm have to check out the others as well.

  2. My two top books, both very philosophical, and yet radically different, and you might have read them both, but they're the good kind of re-read material.

    Intensity by Dean Koontz
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

    1. I haven't read either of those, so I'll investigate them. Is it creepy enough that I won't be able to read it without Vince at home?! haha

    1. I forgot to add the 21 Days book because I read it! Woohoo!

I read a Stolen Life and HOLY COW, so intense.

I really want to read Belly Laughs so that's going on the list for sure, as well as the Pregnancy Project! I watched a movie about that and really wanted to read the book. As for the others, I'll take a look at them! Thanks!

    2. Oh I know, Stolen Life made me feel so sick and I wanted to quit reading it but I felt like I owed it to her to read her story.
I am excited to check out Baby Laughs too... on my Christmas list!
How did you find the Pregnancy Project movie, Netflix? I haven't been able to find it, although I admittedly haven't even looked since probably a week after I finished the book.

    3. Oh and actually, I just noticed that I still haven't traded in Belly Laughs. You want me just to mail it to ya?

    4. If you have Belly laughs, why don't you read it? Or did you mean something else? haha Either way I have it on hold at the library, so save your money! Thank you, though. =)

I watched The Pregnancy Project on Lifetime when we were on vacation. They have it on iTunes for like $5. I don't remember if it was good enough for $5 though!

    5. No Belly Laughs is about pregnancy, Baby Laughs is about the first few months after baby is born. I have read Belly but I want to read Baby now too... but that works for me, and saves me a trip to the post office!
I might have some Amazon credit, maybe I'll see if I can find Pregnancy Project on Amazon and just watch it for free!

  4. If you like fantasy at all (or even if you don't) and need a quick read Neil Gaiman's Stardust is awesome. It's extremely well written and the story itself is very well thought out. Hands down one of my all time favorite books.

    1. I'll have to try it! I saw it come through the library all the time when I worked there and it was super popular, so I should give it a chance! Thanks!
