Avocado, Lemon + Oatmeal Face Mask

Once winter hits, my face ALWAYS has a major breakout. I don't know if it's the cold or the dryness or a mixture of both, but my skin doesn't like it. One of my many remedies that I tried to regain normalcy was an avocado oatmeal face mask with some oats, and it did help my skin! It's finally getting back to normal and I don't feel like I'm 12 again.

All I did was put in 1/2 a cup cooked oats (if you're gluten free like me, be sure to use GF oats, even though you're not eating it. It could accidentally get into your mouth!) in a food processor and processed until it was pretty smooth, then added 1/2 an avocado and and the juice of a 1/4 lemon and process again until smooth.

Then I rinsed my face with a wash cloth, slathered the Playdoh smelling mixture onto my face, and left if for a half hour before showering. I kept telling Vince I should use this for an Ogre mask for Halloween.

After my shower I used some jojoba oil to moisturize it. That's all! I kept the extras in an air tight container and used the face mask for a few days straight.

I bought the *Black & Decker mini food processor a few weeks ago and LOVE it. I used to have a big one but rarely used it because it took so much time to clean and took up way to much space. This little guy is so easy to clean up and small but still processes food really well. The Nerdy Farm Wife has had the same one for like 15 years or something!

Do you have any face mask or remedy you use for crazy faces in the winter?

  1. Ooh yay, I want to try this mask!
That makes me curious, do you normally use only gluten free lotions/soaps/shampoos? Ryan only uses GF. I typically do since we use the same stuff, but I do sometimes use Bath N Body Works lotions and I don't know whether those are safe or not.
Also, I still don't have a food processor and will need one for baby food any ways so I'm going to come back here and buy this one "from you" on Friday! A mini would be perfect!

    1. I honestly don't use a lot of beauty products! I've used Suave pretty much my whole life (and use Suave Professionals now) and it's always been GF, lotion I make at home, and I don't really wash my body, but when I do need it I use Dr. Bronner's castile soap. I hate anything scented so that cuts out the majority of soaps and lotions! As far as B&B goes, almost all their products contain wheat germ, which may have some amounts of gluten in them, but there haven't been any tests on it. The only thing you need to be worried about with that, though, is getting it in your mouth. If you were allergic to gluten you'd need to avoid it completely, but since gluten can't be absorbed from your skin into your intestines, you're fine. But, you'd need to be careful about putting on lotion then licking your fingers, having glutened soap get in your mouth while rinsing your hair, etc, so it's best to avoid it. If I were to use more than the same few things I would avoid anything with gluten. The only thing that I specifically pay attention to (since my beauty products rarely change) is chapstick! There have been many times I've bought chapstick or lipgloss (from B&B actually!) that have gluten in them which definitely makes me sick.

I love the mini one! It's such a good size. The regular sized ones are so big, as if I ever need to process that much food!

    2. Oh cool, I didn't know Suave was GF! We tend to use Dove but it's a lot more expensive than Suave so I'm going to switch! I didn't know you made your own lotion! That's pretty awesome.
I read recently that wheat germ and wheat grass are both safe, but I still just avoid any form of wheat in Ryan's stuff and don't use much of it for myself, if at all.
We went GF with all of the products before we realized it didn't matter, but now we notice he breaks out and weird things happen any time he uses something that isn't GF so we just stick with it. I imagine it's just that he's used to Dove but we'll find out with the Suave! I remember not liking B&B's chapsticks as a kid so I haven't ever purchased it but that's good to know, in case I ever get it as a gift or something!
I know, they're huge! And even if I was cooking for more than just the two of us, I don't have that kind of storage any ways! I'm excited though because I haven't had a food processor since I was 19 or 20!

    3. Yep, Sauve is GF! I LOVE the shea butter Suave Professionals. It's so cheap for the huge bottle and lasts forever.

I know that wheat grass is gluten free, but read that a lot of people are sensitive to wheat germ oil because it actually comes from full grown wheat. And if he has an allergy at all then it wouldn't be good for his skin!

    4. Hmmmm, good to know! I guess I'll probably stop using wheat germ too then, just to be on the safe side. (He is always licking my elbows and knees, you know)
I think it's so weird that wheat grass and buckwheat are safe. The don't SOUND safe.
And on that note, do you trust soy and/or corn gluten? I've read mixed reviews but we just avoid them any ways... typically if it contains I crap I didn't even know existed I figure we should just avoid it any ways.
      Unless it's brownies.
