What I'd Shove My Face With

Sometimes I get so few up with eating gluten free that I REALLY want to cheat. I want to gather up a bunch of gluten filled foods, sit on my couch, and just shove my face, regardless of the awful sickness that would come after. Luckily, I have always been able to resist those urges and have never, not once, cheated. From the day I decided to go gluten free, I have never intentionally eaten gluten. Granted, I've had gluten accidentally, but not intentionally. I am always very good about asking 5 million questions when we go out to eat, I'm sure to call companies to see if their products contain gluten (if it's not clear from the labels) and always quadruple check to be sure something isn't cross contaminated. (I'm so sensitive that if I kiss my husband right after he's eaten gluten I get sick!)

So instead of eating gluten, I will tell you guys what I would eat if I could.

Thin Mints Girl Scouts are roaming around right now trying to sell people their delicious cookies and hot damn, do I miss them. I loved keeping them in the freezer and eating a whole sleeve.

Sugar or Maple Glazed Donut I know, I can make them gluten free, but I would prefer to spend 50 cents at Safeway and get a perfect, sugar, just right donut.

Negro Modello I am not a big alcohol drinker. Even when I tell my husband I want to have wine with dinner, I rarely finish a glass. This is fine with me, but sometimes I just really want a Negro Modello with a lime in it. It's perfect on those summer days when I'm sitting in the sun reading!

Ramen Ho boy, would I love me some Ramen. When I was younger, sometimes I would get such a craving for that and Saltines that I couldn't eat anything else. Nothing would be a substitute. Well, I still get those urges, but I have no choice but to find a substitute.

Sourdough Bread Again, I could probably make this and have it be pretty similar, but similar doesn't cut it. Sometimes I just want to get a loaf of fresh baked bread and just eat the soft delicious inside, leaving the crust for someone else.

Flour Tortillas with Butter and Cinnamon Sugar This used to be a pretty common night time snack at my grandparents house when I lived there. We would but butter on a tortilla, sprinkle it with cinnamon sugar, roll it up, and throw it in the microwave for 30 seconds. AMAZING. I've tried it with brown rice tortillas, but the texture is way off.

Breadsticks from Olive Garden and Cheddar Biscuits from Red Lobster The only reason I went to these two restaurants was for their bread items. Since being gluten free, Vince and I have been to each restaurant one time and I realized their food wasn't the best, their breads were. It was always sad to tell the waiter not to bring it out (because Vince didn't want to eat ten without me...how sweet!). Yes, their gluten free food is good, but the price is not comparable to me if I don't get what I really want!

Fish Sandwich from McDonalds Ok, I know you're probably gagging. But seriously? Those sandwiches were a perfect mix of disgusting and amazing.

Buffets I miss all sorts of buffets: salad, chinese, soup...any! Even if the ingredients should be gluten free, such as salad, I never know if it's been cross contaminated, which means I shouldn't eat it.

And the thing I miss the most?

Sugar Cookies You know those cookies you buy in the store plastic containers that have a massive amount of frosting and the cookies are light and fluffy, almost like cake? I miss those. It's funny because those ALWAYS made me feel so sick after (with too much gluten and sugar) but they might be the thing I miss the most, which is weird to me. I see them all the time and just want to snatch them up. Those, and the ones that are hard sugar cookies with the pink sugar on top that are always out around Valentines Day. (I'll have to take a picture next time I'm at the store so that know what I'm talking about, if you don't know by this description.)

So there you have it. What I would shove my face with if I could. If you're gluten free, what do you miss eating the most? If you're not gluten free, what do you think you'd miss the most?

  1. I couldn't finish reading this post ha ha. It was too temptation-filled.
But... did you know there is GF ramen? It's not the same, of course, but I have come to like it probably just as much. New Frontiers and Albertson's carry them. I like the Bangkok Curry flavor the best. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=thai+kitchen+instant+rice+noodle+soup&hl=en&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=643&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3935228079908538543&sa=X&ei=jDk4T8KLLq6EsgLCvJiyAg&ved=0CGEQ8wIwAQ
