I went clothes shopping today and somehow almost all the clothes that ended up in the dressing room with me were maternity clothes from the sales rack. And I'm not pregnant. So. Ahem. Ya.
Here's a list of why I like them, and why you should, too.
{1} The shirts are long. I mean, super long. It's wonderful! I can sit at a chair and not have my undies show!
{2} The shirts are stretchy. Everyone needs a little stretch in their day, even if it's just to allow room for expansion after eating one too many cookies. Or peanut shakes, in my case.
{3} Elastic waistline. I don't know about you, but my weight fluctuates. I am happy with my weight wherever it's at, but a lot of women aren't. How great would it be to have pants (that DON'T look like pajama pants) that fit you wether you are 5 pounds overweight or 5 pounds underweight?
{4} Extra soft fabric. It may not be true, but it really does seem as if all the fabrics are softer than normal clothes. Next time you walk by the maternity section, casually reach out your hand and touch everything. JUST DO IT.
{5} Cute shirts. Granted, you can find cute shirts in the regular section, but there are so many cute shirts in maternity. Pregnant women still want to look good, so I think the fashion companies are going overboard (in a good way) to be sure that they have options.
I'm sure if you are pregnant right now, you are thinking I'm full of crap, and that there is nothing cute out there. If so, I'm sorry! I'll enjoy your clothes for you. Hehe.
Have any of you non-pregnant people ever bought maternity? What do you think?!

I feel like most shirts these days LOOK like maternity shots... and I have a lot of those. So many dresses and shirts that end right after the bustline and it makes it easy for me to see how some women are able to hide a pregnancy for so long!
ReplyDeleteI used to be pissed off that my local Target put the plus size (me) clothes next to the Maternity clothes (never me- can't have kids even) like somehow the bigger sizes were down a step from Maternity...but then I would start picking up Maternity clothes thinking they were plus size. If I find something I like...I don't care what the tag says! :) I think this is a very smart idea. I also think your positive outlooks pertaining to the clothes are spot on! Good post :) Hearts, Janna Lynn
ReplyDeleteYa, I agree Sara, a lot do! The ones that are 'flowy' at the bust line always make me look weird though. I'll have to post a picture of one of the shirts I got so you can see the kind I like. =]
ReplyDeleteSee, maybe they put them close together so you have more options! =P
ReplyDeleteAnd ya, I don't care what the tag says either. I also think it's crazy that so many women get caught up on the whole "This fits me perfectly, but this is 2 sizes bigger than normal. I won't buy it!" type of thing. Just buy whatever fits you well and is comfy!
Thanks Janna Lynn =D
I LOVEEEEE the long, flowy, loose, comfy, cute shirts that look like maternity shirts!! They are so pretty and go great with leggings, which I also LOVE. I actually have bought a maternity shirt without knowing it was one before. I think from Ross (you may know how their stuff is always out of order haha). I agree with you! Some of them the stomach area is actually too loose or baggy and may make you look bigger than you are, but most are just so awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you posted this. One of my friends thought I was a FREAK for looking through the maternity shirts at Ross after finding how much I liked them. Every time I go to a store, I always see cute shirts that I wish I could show you. Kohls has a ton of those kind of shirts!!
I never did like my maternity clothes 'cause the ones I had to buy when I was pregnant made me look like an old maid and I was miserable for nine months. Now that I'm NOT pregnant, they have all the nice stuff... makes me cry sometimes...
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet but I thought about it. I like my shirts a little longer to DISGUISE my stomach chub, and it's hard to find...I just would feel weird about getting caught buying maternity by like my mom or my BF's mom or someone from church and me have to be like IT ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK.
ReplyDeleteSometime when we're both ready for some new clothes, we have to go to Ross and Kohls together! There are SO many good things there! I hadn't been to Kohls in a while and forgot how much cute stuff they have.
ReplyDeleteI hate when it turns out like that!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that would be so funny, and horrible! hahaha
ReplyDeleteYay, do it! I've been reading http://www.delightfully-tacky.com a lot lately and she always does these adorable outfit posts and I feel all fashion-y and materialistic lately.
ReplyDeleteBut as you know, I am cheap as hell and hate to shop so most of my clothes are gifts, stuff I get for free, or clothes I swap in trades with my pals who also shop at like Target and WalMart and Ross, so none of my stuff is fancy and cool enough to warrant an outfit post. I know because I dumped out pretty much my entire closet trying.
I'll have to check her out. I tend to stay away from most fashion blogs because they make me feel so...inadequate?! The only one I follow (aside from Peachy Keen!) that is a fashion blog is Kendi Everyday, and I LOVE her. Her posts are always always funny! http://kendieveryday.blogspot.com/ Whenever I look at her blog I want to go through my closet and put crazy things together. It never looks good though! haha
ReplyDeleteI'm super cheap as well, so I understand! haha What I've been doing the past few months is saying, "Ok, you get $20 this paycheck to spend on whatever." And then I go to the stores I know are cheap that have awesome sales racks. My favorite is Rue 21 because they have $2 sales racks. That's 9 new shirts including tax if I wanted! Even thrift stores are more expensive than that!
One of these days when you're p here or I'm down there we should meet up and swap unwanted clothes!
Yeah I know what you mean. I feel inadequate and I feel like a materialistic douchebag ha ha but this girl also has the same RV as us so that makes it okay. =P
ReplyDeleteI know I LOVE Rue 21 but haven't shopped in like a year ha ha. I would love that! The only problem is that I am 5'3 and chubby-ish andyou are at least 5'4 and not at all chubby-ish... but maybe I can take the link of yours and use them as width and vice versa for mine on you... it's at least worth a try, eh?
I checked out her blog and it's so cute! I'm so jealous of you both with your awesome Winnebagos!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm 6 foot! Haha But that also means that I wear somewhat big clothes. I look skinny because I'm so tall, but I wear size 7 pants!
I bought some of those maternity look-alike shirts and thought I looked great... until my mom told me some family friends thought I was preggo and approached her about it. It was horribly embarrassing! Generally, I buy my clothes at the local GoodWill. If the tag indicates a maternity top or something, I cut the tag out, so if I am in a show and leave my street clothes in the green room nobody makes assumptions that aren't true. I agree... buy what fits you and looks great on you, forget the haters!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe people would even comment on it without knowing! how rude. I am definitely a Goodwill girl, so I know what you mean. I've never thought about looking at the labels though, I should pay attention to those!
ReplyDeleteI'm really short so should wear smaller pants but I enjoy cake and other deliciousnesses so I wear 7s and 9s usually... but I only have one pair of jeans right now and you can't have them so you can just go through my skirts and shirts and dresses. =]
