Running BAREFOOT in the snow!

Every year in my family, since before I was even born, it's been a tradition that we going running barefoot in the snow! We've missed a year here and there since all the older kids have grown up and moved out, but we definitely did it this year. Even baby Alyla did it and only made a little whimper sound.

Because 2 missionaries from the LDS church happened to be at my grandparents house, one of them ran around my grandparents backyard with us!

I told my grandma I would run in the snow only if she helped me tie my boots up when I left because they take forever to lace up. I was totally kidding, but she did help lace one boot up when I left! Hehe.

{Even though I didn't wear my gauges in my ears and tried to keep my tattoos covered, I couldn't resist wearing my Docs, that are untied due to massive amounts of shoveling.}

All in all, it really wasn't as cold as we expected it to be, given that it was still snowing outside. It is always fun though and I can't wait to do this with my own kids!

  1. Haha. One time we stopped in at your Grandmas house on our way home from Christmas in Mexico, and we did the same thing. It was a lot of fun! We took a family photo afterwards (it's in my profile pictures on facebook). I didn't know it was a tradition :)

  2. It's always the little things that people seem to remember and love about their childhood. That's such a cute picture of your sister and the baby. I'm pretty sure my siblings and I used to do that, but we were pretty much ALWAYS barefoot. lol.

  7. Veronica, we were always barefoot too! haha especially in the summer. I remember running all through the neighborhood barefoot on the steaming asphalt so much that our feet were always BLACK.

    Erin, I absolutely love this tradition too. What does Ellie think of it?!

    Rachelle, I'm so jealous of you and your babe because you get to create family traditions! I can't wait to have babies so i can pass on some traditions as well as make my own. =]

    Sara, it's so fun! Alyla was surprised, but didn't really care about it, it was so funny.

  9. Steffi, thanks for posting our fun! It seems strange to me that I hadn't run barefoot in the snow until last weekend, since we've had several good storms. I guess it was because no one was around when I thought about doing it. Somehow, it doesn't seem like as much fun if I have to run alone. Maybe I'll try it alone sometime just so I can keep it as MY tradition even if no one else can participate. You and Vince don't have to wait for kids to have a tradition. Pop and I went caroling on our first Christmas Eve together even though we didn't have kids. (I have to say it seemed strange for just the two of us - but it was really important to me, so we did it anyway! It took quite a while to have a real chorus behind us.) So dont wait!Go for it!

  10. Gram, I definitely wouldn't want to run around by myself, it would be no fun!

    I'm trying to think of some fun traditions that Vince and I can do by ourselves, and later pass on to our kids. I haven't thought of anything yet though!

  11. I still haven't run in the snow! Mostly because when I think about it, I don't have my camera. And I really want to document it for my blog! I need to just get out and do it, and then take pictures another time for the blog.

  12. Ya, it's more fun when you have pictures to document it, and it's of course WAY more fun when you have your family!

  15. Steff,

    I love that you are carrying on the traditions of your crazy Powell women relatives. It's so fun to see that you will pass the genes on to your kids!
